Turning vegetarian

Posted on May 24, 2014 by Sonali

After shutting down my last series of post, my obsession for food has lessened. I realised after, that coz I was writing about 100 days of food, I was constantly thinking about food subconsciously. Not a good place to be! I love food but have never been or want to be obsessed about it.

Why vegetarian you ask? I have been vegetarian before and while I do enjoy the occasional chicken and meat, majority of what I enjoy and eat is vegetarian food. And I have realised that I feel better when I avoid meat in my diet. So purely for health reason, I decided I will turn vegetarian. Not Vegan (I still eat eggs) but meat- free. Unlike last time, I will not eat fish or seafood this time.

It has been a week and it has been interesting. It was easy for me to make a transition. Indian diet is primarily vegetarian, so that part wasn’t hard. While at work, managing vegetarian lunches was interesting.

I realised that most vegetarian dishes for a quick lunch had a large amount of cheese in it. So unless I opted for a plain tomato pasta, my choices were to have anything vegetarian with cheese in it – spinach and ricotta gozleme, fried rice with veggies, falafel and kadhi rice were my lunches for the week. I am still discovering what else is around.

Diners are easy coz Avi or I cook. Most of our dinners are lentils or vegetable based anyways. So dal, mushroom mutter, gobhi aloo and roti, paratha have been evening meals. Nothing drastically different there.

I am feeling so much better though. It is like I feel lighter and do not feel stuffed. I am eating frequent, smaller meals and am loving it. I am also learning to be creative with dinners so as to still ensure that Avi and Yash still enjoy their meat. But overall I feel great and am determined to continue this way. From next week, I will start posting pics of my vegetarian meals to inspire anyone who wants to go down the same path as me. Till then……have a great weekend.
