I tried to remember and I then knew the book that start these love-hate emotion in me – The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas. It is an Australian book – the author is Greek Australian and the book is set in middle class Australia. It was made in a TV series which was aired on SBS Australia.
It is a raw book about family, relations and emotions. A man slaps another person’s child and it has a ripple effect amongst the people who witnessed it. The book follows the characters in light of the incident.
I love the book for its real, powerful story and the well written characters. I also love that it is set in Oz, my homeland. But I hate the book for its crass language and the sheer way some of society’s evils have been written about. That is what is not palatable to me.
I have read the book a couple of times and am left a mixed emotion every time. So it will always remain one of this books which I will dread every time I pick it but will read it nonetheless.
