New challenge – clean eating

Posted on August 15, 2015 by Sonali

So I have been thinking of a new challenge. My last few have failed and I am determined this time to keep my next one. I am getting older and not any healthier and I started reading about clean eating. Normally I don’t indulge in any health or diet fads as I believe all these are just fads! But this one seemed good and manageable, we eat at home most days and nights and only indulge in occasional take away or processed diners. I am thinking that this challenge will help me focus on those occasional slips and see how best we can turn them to clean.

So what is clean eating? I researched on Google, of course, and found this as the best article. It defines clean eating in the easiest way possible. I know my journey will not be easy and I will fall to temptations on the way but I am prepared. I hope to get better as I learn!

I will chronicle my journey and learnings on this blog. It will be an honest account of how I go and how we cope as a family! I hope it will be fun! And you may get a few Indian recipes in the bargain!

Day 1

Today was the first day so I wasn’t sure how I would go. Lazy morning dictated that breakfast needed to be quick. I was not in a mood for the typical egg and toast brekkie. So I looked in my cupboard to find a packet of MTR upma. Unlike other processed meals, Indian dry brekkie packs are great as they are just mixed ingredients. It was prepared in a jiffy and I had a tasty and healthy breakfast,

It was a cleaning day and Yash and I tried sorting out his messy room with little luck. Try throwing out old toys of a 7 year old and suddenly a toy that has not seen the daylight in months become a precious play thing! We did manage to take out a bucketload but there is still so much to be left and I am working on coaxing my boy to de clutter.

I was in the mood for lentils, so I cooked my favourite Chana Dal with methi(fenugreek leaves) roti and leftover bhaji from previous night. We ate it watching Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Yash’s latest favourite. I don’t mind as it has Salman Khan and who can refuse that?

Dinner was a pre panned processed affair. We had chicken chippees, tempura prawns and samosas, all prepackaged and frozen. I know the opposite of “clean” but my boys will take longer to adapt. Tomorrow is another day.
