They say the first day is always the hardest and it was hard! By the time I reached home, I had 10 mins to answer my important emails and surf the net before it was 7 pm.
I put down the phone and Tablet on the centre table and got busy with getting Yash to do his homework who decided that it was a day to throw tantrum. So it took me 15 mins to seat him down to finish off the spellings and book reading he had to complete. Now usually, I would settle him and start reading on my IPad but yesterday was different. My 100% attention was on him and it was funny coz Yash was not liking my constant attention. Funny how they change!
After feeding him dinner and putting him to bed, I had my dinner. Again, I am usually reading or exploring something on the net but today I ate my dinner in peace. I was pleasantly surprised that I was thinking about how soft the beans were as I was eating and focussing on my chewing habits, something I hadn’t done in 8 years.
For once I was free after dinner! Nothing to do! I did not know what to do. I haven’t been in this state for a long time. So I decided to watch a movie. Again, it was a different pattern as I am usually multitasking when I am watching the movie. This time along, I saw the movie the way I would watch it in a theatre – with uninterrupted attention. All that was missing was popcorn.
All through this, there were so many times I was tempted to pick up my phone to research on something I saw or pick up the constant whatsapp feed. But I resisted! It was very hard but I took one of my fav book and marched on to bed and I was asleep after reading a few pages.
I woke up early and with the tech curfew still on, I picked up my book to read from where I left. I realised how much we have come to rely on our smartphone from the fact that I did not know what time I had woken up. We do not have a clock in our bedroom! Time to bring the digital clock back from the storage! I was counting the time down to when avi wakes up and tells me it is 7.
I survived till 6:50 at which point I jumped to pick both my devices from the hall stand. After a few clicks, I felt better. I think I did great for the first day but already I am thinking of hobbies and things to do to fill my evenings. It would be an interesting journey and I am looking fwd to it. In the meantime, I have re read the below book halfway….not a bad way to end the week!
