This question is very simple to answer for me – I get ignited by learning. I love the company of people where I can have open discussion and share varied points of view. I grew up in an environment where healthy debates were encouraged. We used to have all sorts of conversations on our dinner table, some of them got passionate and heated, but we were never shut down.
That is how I expanded my perspective and point of view in life. By keeping an open mind and curious about everything and everyone, helped me learn and grow. So it pains me when I see voices being shut down in the name of political correctness and pleasing certain groups. Instead of building resilience and acceptance of difference of opinion, we are raising wusses who are ready to run away or shut down at the first voice of dissent.
I am certainly not suggesting that bigotry and hate speech should be tolerated, nor am I suggesting that laws should be made to allow people to practice hate. But every voice has a place in the world. We grow as individuals and as society when we hear different perspectives. Free speech is a cornerstone of a progressive world and it is a shame that in the name of woke culture we are drowning it.
