What a question – I have one answer – Shah Rush Khan! That was what a young me wanted. I am a die hard romantic and Shah Rukh or rather his characters in the movies was all what I wanted as a life companion, like millions of other girls like me growing in that era. I wanted someone to follow me to the end of the earth like Shah Rukh followed Kajol in DDLJ.
And a few years later when Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam released, I day dreamed about having a life partner like Ajay Devgan. When I look back I laugh that movie characters were my benchmark for the most important decision of my life.
And in the end I married a man chosen by my parents – endorsed by me of course. With him I discovered what it actually means to have a life companion. Romance is not about bringing flowers or buying big gifts, it is about watching a movie when you are not fond of cinema. Love is not saying it out loud every day but waking up every morning to make tea coz you know your wife likes it in bed. When you spend your life with someone, small things matter more than big gestures.
I don’t believe there is a type of person you choose as a life companion. You grow and evolve as life companions. There are some foundations of every relationship – Trust and Respect are key to me. But apart from that, everything else is hard work.
I don’t know what I was looking for in a life companion but the one I have is what I would have chosen over and over again. He is my Raj coz I know he will go to the end of the earth with me!
