Day 7 – A book that makes me laugh

Posted on October 11, 2020July 5, 2021 by Sonali

If you were wondering why I had not written for the past few days, it is coz I have been on a mini break – we went to south coast for a holiday. It was hard to write there. So for the next few days, I will be writing two blogs a day till I catch up!

I haven’t read many comedy books – I don’t know that they exist. But mostly the books that make me laugh are absurd books. And they are a plenty!

The one book that makes me laugh every time I read it is The Marriage Bureau for rich people by Farahad Zama. Now don’t get me wrong, I like the book. In fact I have read it multiple times. But that doesn’t make it less laughable.

The book is, as the title suggests, about a older gentleman called Ali opening up a marriage bureau after his retirement. He does it to keep himself busy but the bureau gets successful and the book is about the story of the various characters who visit him to get married.

The reason it makes me laugh is due to the absurdities portrayed about marriage in india, most of which are true. The writer has used various characters to draw that out. Like the marriage within caste and even then a particular community, the fascination of having a fair bride, ensuring that the “status” of the two families match etc etc

The book was a runaway success and the author ended up penning a series of 4 books at the back of first one. But none of the other three turned out to be as successful as the first one.

I would only recommend this book if you are a book worm wanting to read Indian authors. Otherwise nothing special about this one.
