Day 14 – Book turned movie and completely desecrated.

Posted on October 16, 2020 by Sonali

We know that books are a favourite with the movie makers. It makes complete commercial sense – you have a story and for a popular book you have ready made audience. Hence why we have so many best sellers that have been converted to movies.

I usually like to read the book before I watch a movie but sometimes it so happens that I watch a movie and realise it was based on a book. So I go read the book after.

It is one such movie that I will talk about in today’s blog. Completely desecrated is probably a strong word but I was surprised when I read the book.

I am talking about P.S. I Love you by Cecilia Ahern. I watched the movie and loved it. It is one of my favourite movies till date. I loved Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank. I loved the Irish setting and the story.

This was before I knew it was based on a book. I picked up the book much later and read it thinking i can run the movie in my head when reading the book.

I was in for a surprise! The book is so so different to the movie. In fact, the movie is just based on the gist of the book. There is very little common between the book and the movie except for the letters. It is like there are some chapters taken from the book and converted to the movie.

I was sorry I read the book after I had watched the movie coz it is a well written book. I just didn’t enjoy it after watching the movie, both cause I had a certain expectation and also as I love the movie.
