Day 12 – Laugh away blues

Posted on May 23, 2020 by Sonali

They say laughter is the best medicine! And it is so true. Have you ever observed that when you smile or laugh, it makes you feel better. There is even a scientific logic to it – it reduces the level of stress hormones and increases the level of health-enhancing hormones, like endorphins,

The site Mentalfloss talks about some of the other visible benefits. It helps reduce your blood pressure, anxiety and negative emotion. Not only that, it is a natural immune booster and anti-depressant. It helps your cardiovascular system, helps you breathe better and even helps you burn calories!

There is even laughter yoga to help you get in your mojo if it does not come naturally to you. If you visit housing societies in cities in India, you will find a group of individual practising that in the morning.

Humor, and by extension, laughter, stimulates multiple physiological systems that decrease levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol and epinephrine, and increase the activation of the dopamine-dispensing reward system of the brain, according to researchers of a 2017 study in Advances in Physiology Education. A 2003 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine found that viewing a funny film decreased a wide variety of stress hormones.

So smile and laugh everyday and you will see a change in your mood. I loved this video that I saw on YouTube. And while it is an advertisement for a biscuit, it still tells a powerful message on smile!
